There’s really no explaining it. It’s a tradition like no other. People from all walks of life, all levels of income and all levels of interest in horse racing turn their eyes upon Louisville once a year for a festival of beauty, booze, sunshine and partying with the backdrop being the most famous horse race in America. Welcome to Kentucky Derby 138.
Derby weekend at Churchill Downs kicked off on Friday with the 138th running of the Kentucky Oaks, a race for fillies and mares. It is a day that is officially dedicated to the ladies of the world and appropriately, the winner was ridden by female jockey Rosie Napravnik, who made history being the first female rider in history to win the Kentucky Oaks! Though, not without drama, a late storm rolled across Kentucky and dumped some rain on the well dressed men and women enjoying the day’s festivities. On Saturday morning, the record crowds poured in for a day of sunshine and horse racing capped off by the 138th Kentucky Derby won by Mario Gutierrez and I’LL HAVE ANOTHER!
So without further ado, enjoy the photos from this special weekend of racing and fun and of course a miriad of images that hopefully make you feel like you were there with those of us fortunate enough to experience these things in person.
