The Commander Returns at Haydock

By Jamey Price In Recent Work, Equine

During my time riding out for Nigel Twiston Davies, I was able to get to know some of the horses in his yard. One of them being Imperial Commander. Nelly, his barn nick name, is a big boned, tall, “chaser” who just so happens to be the winner of the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup. For those unfamiliar, if there is an equivalent to winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it would be something along the lines of winning the Kentucky Derby…but for steeplechasers. Only the best of the best dare turn up and Imperial Commander put to shame the best horses in the world when he won the Gold Cup in March.

Following his big win, Nelly was put out to pasture for a few months and returned to his winning ways by taking the Betfair Chase at Haydock on November 20.

I was at the course shooting as an assistant, and though i generally try to remain unbiased in my photographing of races, this one was hard to do so with this one because of my connection to the Twiston Davies yard and the horse himself. He did not disappoint.
